Mongolian City Sewers

In the city of Ulaanbaatar, during winters that can hit minus 20 degrees Celsius, vagabonds – including pregnant women and children - enter the numerous manholes to sleep among heaps of cardboard and garbage. There are only two ways to avoid freezing to death: sleeping on the underground hot water pipes, or drinking incessantly. On one hand, the pipes can burst and scald them badly; on the other hand, people sometimes toss in cigarette butts maliciously, causing the alcohol-soaked vagabonds to burn to death. Our host visits what others consider the scum of the earth, and see how they cling on to life inside their dark little holes.

China's last cave settlement

Life here is hard. Humans and livestock alike drink water that seeps in from the cave ceiling, drop by precious drop. There is constant darkness in the cave, not to mention dampness, choking smoke, and the heavy smell of feces. The lack of sunlight means no strong and ruddy child can be born here. Buying a pack of salt requires a 15-kilometre walk, and a child has to walk 3 hours in the hills to go to school. This natural cave called Zhongdong is what 18 Hmong households call home. Our host reaches this location from Guiyang, Guizhou, after 3 hours on the road, 1 hour of trudging on muddy trails and another hour of hill-climbing. He finds the cave under-facilitated. As curious tourists gradually stopped coming, the only guesthouse and eatery here had to close down. The local government had tried to offer help, but why are the Hmongs not accepting it?

In Asia, there is a feast for every occasion, whether it be Thanksgiving, harvest, or a new year. Asians are fond of hosting feasts where the entire village can gather to eat together and be merry. Feasts are Asia’s cultural spectacle - the street banquets of China’s Hani tribe, the festivals of Taiwanese Hakkas, the Tibetan Shoton Festival feasts of the wild, Japanese buckwheat carnivals, India’s largest kitchen serves 50,000 free meals daily. Behind the mélange of textures, flavours and colours lie a deeper, historical significance and cultural resonance. The feasting and merrymaking last for days without end. In partaking of the feasts, a communion is formed. In that communion, ties and lives are bound as one.

Japan's homeless

Although Japan boasts a high standard of living, over a decade of economic stagnation has brought to light the problem of poverty in some quarters of her society. For many first-time visitors to Japan, the sight of vagabonds making their abode in a train station lobby defies imagination. Local artiste Joanne Peh is in Tokyo to find out about assistance provided to these people by the civic organisations Moyai and The Big Issue, the latter of which runs a publication that helps the homeless achieve self-dependence. Looking at the volunteers’ altruistic work for the vagabonds, Joanne realises that helping the poor is not a matter of simply dishing out material support, but of genuine care from within.

A prodigious amount of rubbish is dumped here every day, which adults and children readily swarm over to seize whatever trash that may be recycled.
